Think about this question.
If I came to your home tomorrow with a 10 ton slab of marble, chisels, hammers and any other tool a sculpture requires… what could you create? What would you make?
It gets better!
You have 5 days to complete this task AND its not up to you what you make. Nope. I demand a life size replica of yourself.
Sound daunting? Do you feel any anxiety just thinking about the process. Where would you begin?
I use this analogy many times but I want to restrict the analogy to this one simple truth.
Tools are tools. Inanimate objects designed to simplify a task. A task required to be made repeatedly.
THE POINT?
There are hundreds of tools for finding people, locating resources and promoting yourself or business. But where is the logic, the plan or even just the theories it takes to produce that statue we spoke of?
So let me make this suggestion.
There was a day when photographers and illustrators were hired based on their talent. Today with the invention of amazing technology such as Digital cameras, Photoshop and Illustrator the world is proliferated with photography and illustrations lacking that talent. Don’t get me wrong. I believe greatly in technology but imagine if that kid with Photoshop and illustrator had learned to use the techniques of the masters! That’s when we see truly amazing art.
Its what I call a race to the bottom. When technology develops a tool that allows everyone to excessive a task but without the talent, training and knowledge behind that task.
This is the state of networking today. If you are using 3 or more tools for networking and connecting, do you have a plan? A purpose? Whats your end game?
This is what I refer to as the funnel. A process that actually shows a return on your investment. Investment in time and new tools.
Next week I will be discussing the principals I encourage my clients to utilize in deciding which tools and what methods to push through that funnel.
Have a great weekend!
